22nd March 2016—Leamington Spa Shopmobility Trustee Receives Rotary Club Award

The Rotary Club of Royal Leamington Spa, established over 90 years ago, has
re-introduced its "Community Service Awards" this year. The Club is well
represented in the local community (nationally & globally too) and decided
that it would like to recognise local community heroes who have made an
exceptional contribution to the service of others. The nominations came from
the members themselves & 3 Awards were made at a ceremonial lunch hosted by
the Club in the presence of The Chairman of the District Council, Coun. Michael
Doody. Jayne Canning, a Trustee of Shopmobility for a number of years, was
one of the recipients. As well as her work with us, she has been
involved with the MS Society and Painting for Pleasure. She also fundraises
for Helen Ley and Castle Froma Nursing Homes.

Along with the other two recipients, Jayne was described by Rotary
President, Barry Frith, as an examplar of Rotary's logo, Service Above Self.

Jayne is seen below being congratulated by David Greenwood of The Rotary Club

Jayne Canning with her award certificate, along with other guests at the ceremony.

We took part in the Leamington Carnival on Saturday 9th July. Riding scooters to help publicise our services were the new Chair of Trustees, Sidney Syson (left), and trustees Councillor David Greenwood (centre) and Councillor Andrew Thompson (right).

Our 500th new member since we reopened in March 2014 joined on 23rd September 2016. Coral Pavitt is seen here receiving a commemorative gift from Shopmobility manager Robin Brooks (left) and Trustee of the charity Andy Gotts (R).

We celebrated the third anniversary of our re-opening at the beginning of March, with cake and bubbly (non-alcoholic!). We also had one of our Try-Day Fridays at the same time. These take place on the first Friday of each month, when anyone can try a mobility scooter under supervision, at no cost.

Here a potential customer tries out a scooter, with (left to right) Richard Collins (assistant scheme manager) and trustees of the charity Andy Gotts, Sidney Syson, Ann Morrison and Jayne Canning

On 8th March we had two visitors from Coventry University. Pictured with Robin Brooks, our scheme manager, are Dr Yanguo Jing (left in picture) and Mark Elshaw (right), who teach an Assisted Living degree course at the university. They came to see what we do and we hope that some of their students will be spending time with us later in the year, gaining experience of working with people who have mobility difficulties.
